Featuring: Vocals – Emma (main) & Erin (harmony), Guitar – Isabel sing ‘Someone like You’ by Adele
Director – Emily
Coming into the class we saw a huge black case, cables and cameras, and we were excited when James told us to ‘unpack’ everything. Opening up an endless number of cases we set up film cameras, mics and lights, trying to figure out how to put equipments together (with the help of James of course).

We learnt when setting up the gear to record, we try to have film from lots of different angles and audio recordings from multiple mics which will allow us to switch to the best angles when we edit the recording and if one of them doesn’t work we always have enough recording to work with.
Among our equipment, there were two large HD video cameras on tall tripods which were for the fixed shot and panning shot. Then we had other video cameras during the filming such as the ‘wobbly camera’ – the hand-held camera for close ups, and other phone cameras set up from different angles.

Lights, Camera, Action! What about the audio recording? When we are recording performances, there is another equipment that quite important and they are MICS! I finally got to learn about how the different mics are used. We used:
- A standard ‘dynamic mic‘ to focus sound recording on the vocals.
- A pair of ‘pencil condenser mics‘ we positioned as ‘xy’ placement so that we catch the right and left sounds and catch the brighter sounds. (Interesting fact: condenser mics use ‘phantom power’ so when connecting to sources, it needs to be ‘+48v’ and they are more fragile than dynamic mics)
- Zoom mic which are used as portable recorders
- Phone mic which were not as good as proper mics, but ‘hundred times better’ than the built-in mics on phones
With everything set up including the lights, we finally began the filming! When the cue was given, people who were on a recording device hit ‘record’ and called out “rolling!” when their device was properly recording then our Director, Emily clapped the director’s cut in front of the camera. Repeating this, we took a couple of shots.
